Memory Foam Mattress versus Coil Spring Mattress - How Do They Differ?

November 7, 2009 on 7:00 pm | In Other Home Furnishings |

Have you ever thought of how people got the idea to begin sleeping on springs in the first place? I mean, consider it for a minute, what would you feel like to lay down on the bare springs? And why is it, that lying on springs with some type of covering over them, is considered any better?

The invention of an innerspring mattress was first documented, by patent, in 1865, and there have just been some minor changes, to that first construction , in the following 140 years. During the same period, we went from ploughing soil with oxen, to men travelling to space. Don’t you find it conceivable that we could find fresh ideas and materials to improve the things we spend 1/3 of our lives on?

The differences between a common coil spring mattress and a memory foam mattress, will be given, to help you understand the difference.

The Distinction In Complete Body Support

One feature, in which a memory foam mattress is more suitable for you is the feature of total body support. A memory foam mattress and an innerspring mattress differ considerably in this respect. A coil spring mattress makes your body conform to it. The pressure, from the coil springs, in the mattress, is directed at your body. It’s similar to a push and shove match. Your body is pushing down on the springs, making them bounce back and they’re shoving back against you, trying to uncoil. On a coil spring mattress, your body is supposed to conform to the mattress’s shape. This is why you experience aching back and stiffness, when you wake up in the morning. With the best memory foam mattress, the opposite happens. The memory foam adapts to your body, because it’s your body that presses it’s force onto it. So, as you lie on it , you will feel the memory foam altering to support you, giving you a feeling of complete relaxation. It is because of this feature, of a memory foam mattress, to completely support your body and conform adapt to your weight, that the actions of the other person in the bed will not affect you. As coil spring mattresses do not conform to you, they are unable to extend your weight evenly. If you’re going to use your mattress with an adjustable bed, memory foam provides much more elasticity allowing you to benefit from the full range of motion an adjustable bed offers.

One more Distinction Is Temperature Sensitivity

One more distinctive feature , between innerspring and memory foam mattresses, is that memory foam mattresses have the ability to react to different temperatures. The memory foam can sense the various temperatures of your body and either be firm or soften. This leaves you with a great cozy feeling when it has absorbed the warmth of your body and becomes softer . Innerspring mattresses are not able to do so . They cannot respond to your heat , and this is why someone, who is sick with a fever, would feel more comfortable on a memory foam mattress.

Plan a trip to your local mattress store to try lying on the coil mattress vs. the memory foam mattress and watch the difference in comfort levels.
